Maciej Dyszkiewicz is primarily a traditional stone wheel engraver who was taught the craft by his father in Warsaw, Poland. After coming to Canada and taking glass blowing courses at Sheridan College, he started to teach engraving techniques.
Now that Maciej blows his own glass, his approach to engraving has changed. The two areas most affected by his new approach are colour and form. Traditional stone wheel engravers usually work with clear glass and simple forms, therefore designs hardly expand beyond geometric and floral patterns. With Maciej’s modern approach to colour and form there are no limits to engraving. Regardless of this new approach, Maciej’s work maintains the single most important aspect of stone wheel engraving, the optics.
In his latest work “Systems & Mechanisms” series “Architectural Birds” series and “Battle Horse” series he explores the similarities between nature and the human mechanical world that is full of different technologies.
