GLASS MEET THE FUTURE FILM FESTIVAL 2021

20 march 2021 - 04 april 2021

Synopsis

Glass fragments illuminate to create discreet worlds of light and color, which radiate in darkness. Swells of luminescence match the meditative dynamics of the flute’s sound, which feel almost like breathing. The resulting film is a tranquil mediation on light and sound, elements of this world that feel separate from time.
My visual, synesthetic experience of music is conveyed in the imagery in this video.

Kari Sundet, on composing the music for “Timeless”
“I live in a region of Norway with tall mountains, lots of forests and the Atlantic ocean roaring a stone’s throw away from my house. Much of the landscape around me has probably felt, looked and sounded much the same for thousands of years. Major changes happen too slowly for us to perceive, so to us it feels timeless. This piece was inspired by Laura Lentz’ series of comfort pieces, and being surrounded by landscapes unaffected by whatever else is happening in the world is comforting to me. Being in nature can also feel like slowing down time, or getting off the carousel for a little while . Timeless is my attempt at capturing this feeling of being “outside time”

ARTIST STATEMENT
Madeline Rile Smith

I am interested in the intermingling of the five senses; multisensory tangling, and translating information from one sense to another. I have synesthesia, so I experience sound, language, and music visually as color. The sound of a friend’s name, or hum of a melody exists as a flash of color which appears involuntarily. Just like music, color fades the moment it is brought into existence. Through video I highlight glass’s sensory qualities; optics, light and color in an attempt to convey the experience of blended senses.
