GLASS MEET THE FUTURE FILM FESTIVAL 2021

20 march 2021 - 04 april 2021

Synopsis

Sometimes we get stuck in a cycle that we want to break out of. In this performance, I wear a glass mask that distorts my vision and hinders my speech as the glass holds down my tongue. My body makes repeated gestures that resemble basic traditional Javanese dance movements that I recalled from childhood. I dance while citing the chorus of a song titled Lagu Hidup by Indonesian artist Sisir Tanah. I could only break from the cycle when a friend hears my cry and struggles to break me free. This is a performance about vulnerability and social support.

ARTIST STATEMENT

Vulnerability sparks connections. Growing up, people around me stressed the idea that being vulnerable is a weakness. However, as I explore this intimate feeling, I realize that vulnerability is a human experience that forges relationships and fosters trust.

My current work explores topics surrounding mental health and human connection through vulnerable performance pieces. They invite viewers into an anxious space while evoking hope through the presence of social support. I use glass as a material because of its state of uncertainty. It is fragile yet lasting; solid yet fluid; mouldable yet rigid.
