GLASS MEET THE FUTURE FILM FESTIVAL 2021

20 march 2021 - 04 april 2021

Synopsis

“Perfect” takes place within “Lift Like a Princess,” a fantastical gym composed entirely of sparkling pink glass which sweetly subverts the narrative of the Pink Princess Industrial Complex. The soundtrack, composed by the artist using her labored breath and glass-and-latex instruments, provides tense contrast to the saccharine scene. The intense workout depicted reflects the artist’s struggle with internal and societal forces that demand Perfection, as a mother, lover, artist, friend and academic. These compulsions are amplified by pressure exerted by western culture on women to push their bodies to the point of starvation and injury to attain the “perfect” body.

Credits

Film footage shot by Kelsie McNair. Edited and sound composed by Jennifer Hand. Shot at the now-closed Carrack Modern gallery in Durham, North Carolina during the installation run of “Lift Like a Princess” in 2017. Soundtrack composed and film edited in 2019.

ARTIST STATEMENT
Jennifer Hand

I make art about the cultural expectations that govern the lives and bodies of women. Immersive installations, performances and video act as a safely saccharine lens through which to examine the taboos that infect western girlhood. I disrupt the patriarchal equivalence of the feminine with the frivolous by making provocatively intense work that drips with both challenge and the color pink. The color of blushing lovers, budding cherries, the perfect cupid’s bow of a baby’s mouth, new life and sunsets and sex, pink is present in the moments of sweetness and silliness that make life worth living.
