Charlie Murphy “Brains in a Dish – Growing the Stuff of Thought”

GLASS MEET THE FUTURE FILM FESTIVAL 2020 | NORTH LANDS CREATIVE | 03 JULY - 17 JULY 2020

synopsis

CATEGORY : DOCUMENTARY

Charlie’s Murphy’s glass sculptures and installations for the Brains in a Dish project investigate how advancing techniques in bioengineering are allowing researchers to grow brain cells in a dish. These act as tools for modelling brain development and the impacts of disease on a cellular level. Exploding and animating intricate activities of neural cultures through glass, light, projection, she choreographs lasers and UV reactive colour across reformed scientific glass equipment. She’s creatively exploring the structures and coded colourisation of brain cell cultures observed in the lab, as her very own skin cells are grown ‘in a dish’.

ARTIST BIO
CHARLIE MURPHY

Charlie Murphy draws emotive human connections out of glass, light, photography and video. She creates dramatic dynamic sculptural installations and performative events for a wide range of UK & International contexts including The Lowry, The Royal Festival Hall, Science Gallery, Wellcome Trust Collection, Tate Modern and the Venice Biennale. As a co-director for Wellcome’s Created Out of Mind team, she has been developing interdisciplinary research projects which aim to raise awareness about lesser known impacts of dementias at social, personal and cellular levels. Collaborating with people living with rare forms of these conditions and pioneering scientific research at UCL’s, her projects investigate the powerful metaphors used to describe and articulate these neurodegenerative conditions.
